exploring the benefits of fasting

The spring season invites us into growth, rejuvenation, and restoration after a season of rest and hibernation.

With spring being the season where many people partake in fasting for various reasons such as rejuvenating the body, mind, and spirit, I thought I’d take a moment to look at this age-old practice in modern day wellness as I am often asked by clients, patients, and family members about the benefits of fasting.

Exploring the Benefits of Fasting

Intermittent fasting has become one of the most common eating patterns followed by adults in the US. From a medical standpoint, research has looked at intermittent fasting for the benefit of multiple health issues including obesity and weight loss, diabetes and blood sugar control, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, stroke, metabolic syndrome, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, depression and mood disorders.

Intermittent fasting involves a spectrum of dietary patterns with periods of calorie restriction or calorie reduction over a specified time interval. It is commonly researched in two different ways, with variations including short-term and long-term.

These forms of fasting have been shown to have improved adherence compared to more restrictive diet patterns such as prolonged calorie restriction (think weight watchers) or low carb (think Atkins), as people often fall off from these latter dietary patterns after 1-4 months. With any type of eating pattern, adherence is vital for success.

Exploring the Power of Fasting for Spiritual Enlightenment

I regularly practice fasting for spiritual purposes to deepen my relationship with God, set a tone of balanced living in body, mind, and spirit, and restore clarity of purpose.

Spiritual fasts can be for a variety of reasons, depending on the need and intention for the fast, such as for discernment, purification, self-examination, healing, preparation for something big like a new venture, or spiritual strength.

Fasting can reveal patterns and habits through evoking self-observation. In this enlightening process of self-study, any habits and patterns that are not promoting your wellbeing can be transformed to support your health. In fasting we improve our physical and spiritual health, and ultimately develop strength of character.

Change your habits, change your life.

Thinking about fasting? Consider this first.

*If you have any health issues, always consult with your doctor first to discuss potential risks and side effects that could apply to you. While intermittent fasting has been shown to benefit multiple health issues, longer-term studies in diverse populations are still needed, and some health conditions may not be suitable for fasting.

*Consider your intention. Ask yourself-why fast? What is my motive behind fasting? Why am I doing this? The intention with which you approach a fast will influence the outcomes of the fast.

*Self-discipline is key. Your commitment and ability to stick to a fast and dietary pattern is just as important as the type of diet or fast you choose.

Set yourself up to succeed by choosing an eating pattern that supports your health and lifestyle!
